On May 16th, 2012, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ School Board endorsed Item H20, in support of creating a campaign to bring awareness to the issue of human trafficking. This effort was developed with the assistance of the Kristi House.
Human trafficking involves the commercial exchange and exploitation of humans, involuntary labor, servitude and debt bondage especially involving children. Human trafficking is a growing problem worldwide rising to the second most common criminal activity behind the illegal drug trade. Currently, there are approximately 27 million people enslaved throughout the world with 2.5 million located in the United States. Florida, with one of the highest incidences of human trafficking in the country, has been identified as a hub for human trafficking.
In an effort to assist school administrators in sharing information with staff and students on the issue of human trafficking, School Briefing ID# 11938 was transmitted following the May 16, 2012 board meeting.
The school briefing includes: 1) a fact
sheet developed by the United States
Department of Education on the issue
of trafficking for use in schools,
2) a resource handout that includes
online and referral information,
and 3) a copy of an awareness poster
that can be used in conjunction
with school awareness efforts.
